Coding Agents and Scientific Computing

How are coding agents changing scientific computing, and what could ASU-RSE do to help researchers adapt their work? Come join us for a discussion of the current landscape, experiences with these tools, and possible actions and continuing initiatives for ASU-RSE.
When? Thursday, September 17, 2026, 10am to 11:30am MST, plus social time
Where? Conference Room at ECA 120 (link to Maps), or online on Zoom
Agenda items:
- The current landscape. What does the state of coding agents in scientific computing actually look like?
- Tools and experiences. What are people encountering with coding agents, and why does it matter for scientific work?
- What researchers need. How is agent use affecting scientific measurement, interpretation, understanding, validation, collaboration, and reusability beyond the original project? (If we don’t know, how do we find out?)
- Possible actions this year. What could ASU-RSE usefully do? One possibility is a collection of structured cases from research teams, beginning at ASU and designed to extend beyond it. What else?
- What to carry forward, and by whom. What can we reasonably take on, and should it sit with ASU-RSE, a subcommittee, or something else? We’ll discuss initial responsibilities, first steps, communication with research teams, and how this work could help ASU-RSE.
